How to make a graceful networking exit – The Globe and Mail.

This is  a good short article on how to wrap up conversations at conferences or in other situations.  Like the art of small talk, the art of dis-engaging doesn’t come naturally to all and not everyone will pick up body language or has any idea on their internal clock, how long they’ve been talking.  The author offers three strategies when you want to wrap up a discussion:

1. The verbal disengage – something along the lines of “It’s been nice speaking with you, let’s grab a coffee sometime,” or “Do you have a business card?”

2. The third-party introduction – As it sounds, introduce the person to another passer-by.

3. The “gotta-go” technique – Excuse yourself to get a drink or go to the washroom.
